Lyman 6th Graders Visit the home of William Allen White
Mrs. Lynne Pelton-6th Grade Teacher and Ms. Debra Stewart-Literacy Coach
September 18, 2008
The sixth graders of Lyman had a once in a lifetime adventure on August 26th in Emporia. With the help of Linda Sobeiski and Nick Gronseth, from the William Allen White House State Historic Site, they received a private tour of where the White family lived and many important people came to visit. After the tour, Paula Inman and Heather Collins-Smith from Washburn University, gave a book talk about this year's William Allen White book list. Sitting on the porch where Mr. White used to entertain his guests, the sixth graders listened and discussed the list for this year's W.A.G.S.(William Allen's Got Stories) Book Club.
Lunch was educational, too, for it was at Peter Pan Park which was given to Emporia by the White Family in honor of their daughter Mary who was killed in a horse riding accident. The story of Peter Pan was Mary White's favorite book.
To complete the day of learning about why W.A.W. was an important figure in Kansas History, the group took a tour of the Emporia Gazette with Mr. Patrick Kelley. The sixth graders are proud to continue to honor Mr. White with their reading of the William Allen White List and monthly meetings of W.A.G.S.
